Why I am a craft beer drinker. [UPDATED]
Because I fit the profile, as a study recently reported in Advertising Age shows:
Craft beer drinkers are more likely to think about beer than work (gotta love that). They are open-minded, more liberal, and more intellectually curious. They don’t sweat the small stuff like work deadlines and are 153% more likely to buy organic.
And why my right wing friends (you know who you are) really ought to quit drinking entirely and go join folks who think just like they do:
Tee-totals don’t like to loosen up very much. They are conservative and honor tradition and authority, and are 50% more likely to call themselves Republican, and are 30% more likely to never buy organic products.
The data came from 2600 consumer interviews by Mindset Media, a market research firm which is big into psychographics (”attributes relating to personality, values, attitudes, interests, or lifestyles”). The summaries quoted above are from Harry Schuhmacher’s great Beer Business Daily.
UPDATE (2PM) — More details on the study here, along with several comments from readers who pretty much disagree with its findings.
If you did 2 minutes of research you would see the neo prohibitionists are much more closely connected to the democratic party than they are the republicans

I always thought MADD in with the democratic party more than the GOP
Actually, as they’ve gotten more autocratic and seeking to enforce their morality on everybody else, I’d say they most resemble the tea party/Beck wing of the GOP.
While I respect Hanson’s work a lot, I would hardly characterize all those organizations as “neo prohibitionist.” And to suggest that all of them (The AMA? Seriously?) are somehow connected to the Democratic Party is viewing the world with a rather obvious filter.
pot meet kettle
the biggest funding source/financier of that the neo prohibitionists is the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and I would argue they are in the democratic camp
another heavy hitter in the new temperence movement is fomer secratery of health under carter Joe Califano
I realize that you’ll probably reject anything I say about this out of hand, but the only one of those orgs that’s definitely not prohibitionist is the AMA. The others have strong prohibitionist leanings, though none of them are dumb enough to call for outright prohibition.
But most of them are on the ‘progressive’ side of things. You don’t see a lot of scientific anti-alcohol groups on the conservative side; they tend to be moralistic and religious in nature, and not as organized.
This is why I’m looking for a new political party. The Republicans keep telling me what I’m not allowed to do; the Democrats want to take all my money. I need a socially liberal, fiscally conservative party.
Actually, I suspect you are pretty close to correct in your evaluation but it’s that “telling me what I’m allowed to do” part of the equation that suggests to me that prohibitionists, neo or real, would be happier on the right.

Say what?
so progressive ‘nanny state’ neo-prohibitionist orgs are really on under cover right wingers? Sorry I do not buy it for one second. Have to take the good with the bad Jack, I am a democrat/ledt winger but I can admit there are lot of wack jobs in our party as well who feel the need to legislate peoples’ lives because ‘they know better’ just as much value conservatives out there who do the same
I agree with you in general, Al. But in which party do those who have that need have the most influence? In which party are they more ascendant? I would argue that the “nanny state” folks are at least trying to achieve what they feel is for the common good and the right wing idealogues are generally acting out of more, shall we say, “limited’ motives. I want neither side to achieve its ends, but I think I know which side would be more damaging to my, and the nation’s, welfare.
Dude,
you made a claim, that dries are Right Wingers ( tounge in cheek, I know) the truth is the organized neo prohibitionist movement tends to come from the left side of the political spectrum end of story carry on.
Carry on I shall. Thanks, Al.
Sorry -
Relax, Don’t Worry, Have a home brew!
I wonder what the marketing team would come back with as a profile for the average home brewer.
There is no “average” home brewer. Each is sui generis. And a little bit nuts (in a good way).
Lew, libertarians are fiscal conservatives and socially liberal. I gave up on both parties years ago because they fail to represent anyone but themselves. I’m not endorsing the Libertarian (big L) party, just pointing out that libertarians (small l) are historically what you are seeking. I have become one myself.
And I also agree that this study seems flawed.
Jack, you are aware of what “stalinist” means, and that “socialism” is regarded to be on the left end ot the spectrum, right? I only ask because you seem unaware that authoritarian/totalitarian “we’ll make that decision for you’ urges exist on both ends of the spectrum (probably in the middle, too: wouldn’t a centrist dictator be a weird thing to witness?). I prefer liberty, and right now, neither Republicans nor Democrats are big torch-bearers for that.
Joab, ’small l’ libertarians are one thing, and I am one. But ‘big L’ libertarians — Randites in particular — are about as likely to catch on as cold showers. I need a party; I tried the LP, and they are NOT for me. A P.J. O’Rourke Republican party, maybe.
