A most worthy goal to celebrate a long & storied history.

McGillin’s Olde Ale House in Philadelphia opened in 1860, the year Lincoln was elected, will celebrate its 150th anniversary in 2010 with a series of events and, as reported here a while back, its own beer, brewed at Stoudt’s.

The historic tavern’s New Year’s Resolution is one we can all get behind:

150 for 150. “

What’s that mean? It means they intend to serve 150 different beers in 2010.

McGillin's turns 150McGillin’s is Philadelphia’s oldest continuously operating tavern, and has a long, storied history filled with celebrities and ghosts,  It is a tale of survival through not only the current economic recession but also Prohibition and the Great Depression. Through it all, McGillin’s has been owned by only two families: the McGillins, who raised their 13 children upstairs, and the current owners, Spaniak/Mullins family, who bought it in 1958 and have passed it down through 3 generations.

Historic it might be, but there’s a lot of life left in the old gal. McGillin’s was named “one of the 14 coolest bars in the U.S.” by Gourmet magazine and one of the “top 100 bars in the U.S.” by Nightclub and Bar magazine, for two consecutive years.

McGillin’s 1860 IPA is available on tap only at McGillin’s and by the case/bottle at regional beer distributors. When I wrote about sampling the draught release at the brewery back in August,  I commented on its appealing drinkability and noted that head brewer Brett Kinzer described it as a “Session IPA.”

I wonder if there will be a prize for anyone who manages to try all those 150 beers over the next 12 months?
