We dreamed a dream, the dream came true, the future offered all its endless possibilities and we decided “never mind.”

It was 37 years ago today that the last man walked on the moon.

Did we fuck up the space program, or what?

  1. No, we just didn’t find any cheese.

  2. In a word- “yes.”

And they’re still not doing it right. They’ve got the size and shape of the space station all wrong and PanAm isn’t running the shuttle…

    -sigh-

  3. Jack, old buddy, This: “We dreamed a dream, the dream came true, the future offered all its endless possibilities and we decided “never mind.”” Is one of the most profound sentences I have ever seen you write.

Gene Cernan once said, and I am trying to quote this as close as I can., from memory, “I always hoped to see the first man on the moon, I never thought I would see the last.”

It is an absolute tragedy and sin that once having reached the moon, this country became apparently incapable of ever achieving anything truly great again.

I do believe, that the next human to walk on the moon will not be an american and that there is a good chance it will be part in some way, or a commercial endeavour. The good thing is, that if that is the case, it means that there will be a better chance of it continuing from that point.

NASA should be in the exploration and research thing and there should be even more encouragement of private industry getting into space. Tax incentives and other advantages should be there to get the inspriation and inventiveness of people working to achieve space travel and, more importantly in my opinion, space colonization going.
