So, what do _you_ think?

This announcement from our friends at Dock Street will surely upset many of those with a conservative political bent at one level or another. Aside from the concept’s basic cleverness, it is that potential irritant factor which makes it most appealing to me. That’s the kind of guy I am.

THE REVOLUTION NEVER STOPS
OCCUPY DOCK STREET
The only way to take a stand is to start costing them money! Starting December 21th and every Wednesday thereon, Dock Street Brewery will not pay out to the One Percent.

Every time you make a payment with your credit or debit card, businesses have to pay fees to the credit card companies. Operating on a cash-only system allows us to keep the money in the pockets of the 99%. This is why Dock Street Brewery will not accept credit or debit cards on Wednesdays. Since we aren’t paying credit card fees we will pass that saving on to you . We will give everyone a 3% discount…. just for using cash.  All day and night, everything will cost 3% less AND you will be keeping the movement alive!

One of the most recent issues to affect Occupy Philly is the eviction from City Hall.  As free thinkers, we realize the value of a space to convene and arouse momentum. Occupiers and Supporters, come take warmth in a beer at Dock Street. Leave your credit Cards home and make a statement. Hit them where it hurts!

Right off the top, this is great to make a stand, but SO many people now do not even carry cash that I think what will happen is that Dock street will save the credit and debit card fees, but the patrons will, i many cases, LOSE money, not save it.

This is because their patrons will end up using an ATM and paying MORE in fees than Dock Street pays for taking the cards so actually they will be COSTING many opf their patrons money, not saving them any. Especially if it is an ATM gthat is a free standing one placed there or nearby in a store front.

Great idea but ultimately will not achieve the goal of anything other than good sounding publicity.

Depends upon your bank and credit card. I _never_ pay a fee to get cash. Dock Street will essentially be selling at the same price, profit-wise, just giving the “fee” to the customer rather than the credit processor. Their problem, if there is one, will be if customers who don’t have cash aren’t willing to go get some from the ATM. And, sure, it’s a publicity thing at its base, but it’s one with a bit of an edge, identifying with the Occupy movement and all that. That’s what caught my attention.

Well, I do have a particular conservative bend, but I agree in part with the idea. Speaking as someone who identifies himself as a “cash when I can” Libertarian, (Ok, should be “cash when I remember”…) I don’t think that this has to be or even should be associated with the supposed Occupy movement. I’m an advocate of bartering and a localized currency system and even local exchange trading systems, ideas I’ve never actually heard come out of the Occupy camp.

Localized currency, and to some degree paying with fiat (cash aka wallpaper), is a way to stick it in the eye of the system. I see the symbolism, but just one business doing it just one day a week isn’t even a drop in the bucket. I like that they are “giving back” the (measly) 3%. It makes the idea more interesting. Not as though the consumer would really benefit from such a paltry sum. Perhaps, the customers could donate back the 3% to a worthy charity/charities.
