Iron Hill to Ardmore?

Received via email just now from a guy who is usually very clued in on such matters. I will leave him nameless for now while I pursue the question just in case he is misinformed. Credit will be given, profusely, if this pans out…

Don’t know if you are aware that the Iron Hill dynasty is expanding again. Have heard through good authority that IH has signed a lease for a building in Ardmore. It’s interesting that an ex-IH employee had the foresight and determination to start a new and very successful brewpub there six months ago. I guess success sees and breeds success. Who would of known a year ago that Ardmore would become a craft beer destination location in the Philly area.

Where was John Harvard’s when they were in that area? Farther west on the main line, right?

  2. Jack Curtin says:

They were down in the Strafford/Devon area even though they used a Wayne address, so yes.

I would be very pleased. Tired Hands has been a fantastic addition to the neighborhood, and I’ve long thought it would be great to have an Iron Hill in Ardmore, Haverford (please, take over Du Jour!) or Bryn Mawr – the more I can walk to, the better! While there would be some crossover, I suspect Tired Hands and Iron Hill would largely serve different audiences and I’d go to both for different occasions; the more, the merrier.

And – confirmed! That’s just steps away from The Beer Shoppe and Tired Hands: http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/the-insider/Iron-HIll-coming-to-Main-Line.html

really? Does anyone else fear this Starbuksification of beer? I unfortunately live near the North Wales location which provides nothing but bad service and awful beer. Shouldn’t they close that one before opening another?

You have other options in that area you know. First place that popped into my head was Forest & Main.

I know I’m not short on places to find decent beer where i live, I’m just surprised the Iron Hill location has survived this long. Every once and a while I go back to give it a second chance and I always leave disappointed. It really is sub par, which surprises me considering how much better some of the other locations are.

Chester, since all the evidence (i.e., Iron Hill’s continued success) is at odds with your personal experience, wouldn’t it be wiser to just accept that fact rather than trashing the whole company based on your dissatisfaction with one location near you, especially given that you acknowledge the “some of the other locations” are “much better?”

  9. ChesterP says:

Jack, I’m not trying to trash the whole company. I have a habit of looking at things more pessimistically than others. In the end Iron Hill is a business, no matter how much passion they have for beer. With Chestnut Hill and now Ardmore, I was only pointing out the reality of rapid expansion in a region that’s becoming more and more saturated. We do have choices in the area I live and I assume that’s taken some business away from North Wales. I’m attempting to point out that the Main Line might end up being far more lucrative than the North Wales area at this point, especially when Tired Hands is their only competition.
